Uses of Se in Spanish: Structure

Se + 3era  persona singular del verbo

Se dice que  el director tiene problemas

In Spanish there is a neccesity to avoid responsabilities, for this reason is better if you talk using SE indefinido.

Se inocent or Se no fault

Structure:

Se + (me, te, le, nos, os, les) + 3era  persona singular o plural del verbo.

Se me perdió la llave de la casa.

I lost the key of my house.

Se me perdieron las llaves de la casa.

I lost the keys of my house.

In Spanish is better to say: Se me perdió el teléfono (I lost the ´phone) than to say: Yo perdi mi teléfono. When you say: Yo perdí mi teléfono” you are expressing that you wanted to lose the phone. It is not my fault it is the fault of the phone.

This estructuree is useful with the following verbs:

Perder: lo lose       Se me perdio mi cartera. I lost my wallet. 

Romper: to break

Quebrar: to break

Manchar: to stain

Ensuciar: to get dirty

Quitar: to remove

Quemar: to burn

Caer:to drop

Ocurrir: to occur

Quedar: to leave

Acabar: to finish

Olvidar: to forget

 

Passive voice with SE

Se + 3era  persona singular o plural del verbo

Ayer se enviaron las cartas.

The letter were sent yesterday.

 

Se with reflexive verb

Reflexive verb is one in which the action is both executed and received by the subject.

Levantarse (to get up)

Yo me levanto temprano. I get up early.

Reflexive verbs

Acostarse: to go to bed

Despertarse: to wake up

Sentarse: to sit down

Quitarse: to take off clothing

Marcharse: to leave

Peinarse: to comb

Despedirse: to take leave

Dormirse: to fall asleep

Vestirse: to dress oneself

Reciprocal verbs

A reciprocal verbs is one in which people do something to or for each other. In Spanish a reciprocal verb functions exactly the same as a reflexive verb: Example

Nos amamos mucho.   We love each other
