Spanish Language Levels

Here are the levels in a popular classification system for Spanish learning. Below that are some of the lessons often taught at each level.

A1 (Beginner 1)

You have little or no knowledge of Spanish. Maybe you studied Spanish in school, but you remember little of it. We can start with the basics and get you speaking quickly.

A2 (Beginner 2)

You can communicate in many situations using the present, past and future tenses, but with some errors. You can understand Spanish when someone speaks slowly. At this level you might enjoy children’s books in Spanish and visiting places like the market with your teacher; it will quickly improve your understanding and confidence.

B1 (Intermediate 1)

You can speak and write Spanish, but you want practice and expand your grammar and vocabulary. Perhaps you’d benefit from reading a small novel like “Noticia de un Secuestro” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez; we can recommend many and help you choose.

B2 (Intermediate 2)

You can communicate fluently and with confidence in a wide range of situations but would like a deeper study of grammar and structures and perhaps some specific vocabulary. We can focus on specific work or situation vocabularies as well as complex structures. You might also want to learn the Spanish slang of Latin America.

C1 (Advanced 1) and C2 (Advanced 2)

You’re proficient and able to communicate easily and effectively but you’d like to ensure appropriate cultural use and mastery of the subtleties. At this level, sophisticated conversations and discussions with native Spanish speakers about local culture, art, and history are an enjoyable way to put the final polish on your skills.
